Squalane is the least exciting ingredient in most people's routine and one of the few that almost never causes a problem. It has no actives-style mechanism to argue about, no clinical trial for wrinkle reduction to scrutinise, and no marketing story beyond what it plainly is: a stable, skin-identical emollient. That's precisely what makes it useful, and it's worth understanding why the chemistry works out so well.
Squalene vs Squalane: One Letter, Big Difference
Squalene — with an 'e' — is a lipid your body produces naturally. It's a meaningful component of human sebum, and it's part of why young skin has the pliability it does. It is also chemically unstable. Squalene contains multiple carbon-carbon double bonds, which makes it highly prone to oxidation when exposed to air and UV.
That instability isn't a trivial formulation inconvenience. The most valuable use is layering it over a humectant. Apply hyaluronic acid or a hydrating essence to damp skin, then squalane on top to slow that water escaping. Squalane on dry skin in a dry room, with no humectant underneath, is doing half a job.
It's compatible with essentially everything — retinoids, acids, vitamin C, niacinamide — and it's a useful buffer when you're introducing an irritating active. Applying squalane before or after a retinoid measurably improves tolerability for a lot of people, and unlike most 'sandwich method' advice, that one has a clear mechanism behind it.
